The Market

Each industry has unique challenges, but they are alike in their long-term objectives - optimising their scheduling and routing to maximise profit, improve efficiency and reduce driving times. OPSI Systems has developed software that is robust enough to serve multiple sectors, and have designed custom solutions to augment our software's capabilities in specific industries.

3PL

FLO is particularly strong when used by 3PL trucking clients to service their customers. FLO acts as an important mediator between the 3PL and client. The mileage calculated by FLO can be used as the basis for charging of deliveries. In this way, the client is sure that a fair distance is being charged and the 3PL does not have to go to great lengths to prove each charge is valid. Many of our 3PL clients use FLO in this way. In addition, FLO is a tremendous tool for 3PL planners who use it to quote on new contracts, to find optimal fleet configurations and to evaluate the costs of new service offerings.

Agriculture

When delivering feed to farms, farmers may either order full loads or just one or two compartments in a tanker. In either case, the correct scheduling of the deliveries can have a great impact on othe cost of distribution and on the efficient running of the feed mill. The PACE system simultaneously plans the deliveries and production schedule in such a way as to minimize the cost of deliveries and to keep similar feed mixes together to prevent repeated changeovers in the mill. The FLO system is also in use at feed mills that do multi-drop deliveries. At these mills, there are often severe restrictions on delivery schedules. These include not delivering to a chicken farm after a cattle farm, ensuring that chicken farms get their correct feed at the correct time, restrictions on the size of vehicle that can visit certain farms, and so on. The FLO system has been very succesful in all of these environments.

Beverage

The delivery of beverages involves many small deliveries to large numbers of clients. Often these clients have widely varying needs and off load times. This means that creating a schedule for deliveries can be complicated and difficult. FLO has been used in a number of beverage distribution environments, both for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and in all cases has proved to be a highly succesful product, improving on both loading and routing efficiency.

Building

One of the challenges in delivering building materials is that there is no fixed set of delivery locations as new building sites open up every day. These sites are often in areas that are not well mapped and so finding them can be something of a challenge. The advanced abilities of FLO in looking up and locating positions on the map makes this as easy as possible and FLO is in daily use delivering bricks, cement and other builders' needs.

Cement

Within the bulk cement market, building sites typically order their cement when they need it. As a result, it becomes imperative for the cement provider to provide a realistic expecation of the delivery time. CBASS keeps track of all issues related to the delivery of cement, including the load size, delivery times, offloading times, distance/time to each building site, and so on. CBASS is also able to learn information, including how long it takes to offload, via its GPS integration. This also allows it to predict truck utilization and gives the user realistic information related to delivery of the cement.

Dairy

Before milk arrives at a supermarket it must be transported at least three times, first from the farm to the dairy in a tanker, then from the dairy to a warehouse and finally from the warehouse to a store. Freshness is critical, so good planning is key. In addition, the cost of the vehicles relative to the value of the product makes dairy tranport a difficult balancing act on the edge of profitability. To achieve the best results, FLO handles all these complexities and is the ideal tool for streamlining the entire milk collection and distribution process.

Explosives

When explosives are delivered to mines, the main requirement is that the deliveries should be precisely and consistantly on time. Any delay in the delivery of the explosives leads to cascading delays and shortages in production at the mine. This means that the schedule must be created in such a way as to honour all the time commitments while still minimising costs. In addition, it is important to keep track of the on-time record of the trucker. FLO is used to both create the schedule for explosive delivery as well as to automatically track the rate of on-time deliveries through integration to GPS tracking. This makes FLO the ideal tool for this environment.

FMCG

When delivering fast moving consumer goods to supermarkets, the trucker has a number of challenges to face. Some supermarkets impose strict time windows for deliveries, others demand that the truck should leave empty after its delivery, and there are often long delays to offload the vehicles. FLO has been used by many of the top FMCG warehousing and distribution companies to help to manage these complexities.

Fuel & Chemicals

There are a number of complexities in delivering fuel. The tankers are broken into compartments and each compartment can have restrictions on what products it can carry. Also, compartments can be metered or sealed and the order of deliveries should not leave the vehicle unbalanced. In addition, it is often the case that fuel deliveries must be done based on the predicted consumption of the customer rather than a specific ordered amount. Doing it this way allows the planner to always creat full loads. To do this, an accurate forecasting system must be inetgrated into the scheduler. The OVAL product allows the planner to build loads based on forecasted consumption and to integrate these loads into FLO.

Courier & Multi-principal Environments

Courier deliveries and pick ups are always changing and it takes a very flexible and agile system to keep up with the dynamic demands of planning and replanning in this environment. PLATO has the advanced capabilities to allow for this kind of planning.

Motor Vehicles

There are a variety of business types within the motor spare industry and within each of these businesses are unique logistical issues, which FLO is able to address. For example, within the battery industry, the loads are typically small with many drop-offs. FLO is able to schedule these types of routes easily while cutting down significantly on costs.

Paper

As with other industries, there are many business types within the paper industry, ranging from stationary providers to providers of corrugated cardboard, and so on. Each of these businesses have unique issues, which FLO addresses. Some issues may relate to the variety of deliveries, each with its own restrictions, to bulk vs. mass issues for each load, etc.

Passenger

Passenger transport has many unique logistical issues that are addressed by one of OPSI's new products: ETA. ETA is able to address issues such as multi-bookings, pick-up/drop-off in differing locations, ad-hoc/regular bookings, passenger restrictions (for example, disabled passengers), and so on.

Retail Clothing

Passenger transport has many unique logistical issues that are addressed by one of OPSI's new products: ETA. ETA is able to address issues such as multi-bookings, pick-up/drop-off in differing locations, ad-hoc/regular bookings, passenger restrictions (for example, disabled passengers), and so on.

Supermarkets

Often within the supermarket service industry, vehicles spend varying amounts of time at each customer. In addition, some customers are not able to accomodate certain types of vehicles while others may require that trucks making deliveries only carry their goods. These are just a few of the issues that may occur within this industry, all of which FLO has been designed to handle with ease.

Warehousing

Within the warehousing industry, its all about planning. One may have many complicated small deliveries; one may have to deliver a variety of products, all varying in size, mass, etc. FLO easily handles any constraints and classifications of products, vehicles, etc. This flexibility of FLO is one of the reasons it has become one of the products of choice for major warehousing enterprises.
